Globetrotters take over Ottawa

The Harlem Globetrotters came to the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa and played to a near-capacity turnout as part of the “Fan Rules” event where fans get to vote on bonus scoring options that can dictate how the game unfolds.

The Globetrotters have been around since the 1920s and have played over 20,000 games. They have been coming to the Ottawa regions for as long as I can remember and continue to innovate, to keep each visit original and entertaining.

Local  CTV weatherman Matt Scube joined the opposing All Stars roster for the game. As part of his introduction, the Globetrotter gave him the opportunity to practice with them; his attempts to make a shot, with success on the third try helped the Globetrotters determine where they felt he should be positioned, on the bench…

Many of the Globetrotter players have played in the NBA or chose to focus on entertainment and promoting causes that resonates with them. One of the newest player is rookie Tammy “T-Time” Brawner, who was introduced to the game of basketball during summer rec camps, where she would play with the boys. Now she’s doing that as part of the world’s most famous basketball team.

Her love for the game propelled her to be an all-league player at Skyline High School in Oakland, Calif., where she led the team in scoring, assists, and steals.

After high school, she walked on at California State University, Northridge – but then, the lure of nearby Los Angeles compelled her to pursue acting and modeling. During this time, she also earned an undergraduate degree in criminal justice.

One thing T-Time figured out was that she was a ball player and wanted to get back to basketball. Brawner was invited to an open gym tryout at thr Dominican University of California in San Rafael. The head coach, Brianna Chambers, said the first play of open gym T-Time came down the floor, froze her defender with a crossover and then scored. Coach Chambers said after that one display by Brawner, she walked out the gym and said that’s the point guard I want.

Bawner played for Dominican University under coach Chambers for 2 years where she finished out her remaining NCAA eligibility. She became an all-conference selection and led the team in steals and was second on the squad in scoring, assists, and field goal percentage in her final season – all while earning an MBA in global business management.

She is the 10th woman to play for the Globetrotters. Along with Tammy  “TNT” Maddox and “Mighty” Mitchell, the three are the lone women on each of the Harlem Globetrotters’ three touring squads.

T-Time is a professional basketball player and wants to send the message to people that nothing is impossible. She says, “everybody’s route to success doesn’t have to be the conventional route to success. Sometimes there are detours along the path there. Those detours often deter people,” says Tammy. “But I like to call it the scenic route”, says Brawner. “If you keep going, you will end up at your destination in due time. That’s just the thing though, you have to keep going. It’s so easy to turn around, but then you never fulfill your purpose.” Tammy says, “I ended up accomplishing everything I could have ever dreamed of. I have my MBA, I play professional basketball, and I entertain. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. “
